At MFLC we have a child centered curriculum that provides concrete experiences and encourages the child to initiate activities and make decisions in planning and implementing these activities. Within the classroom structure, the children are given multiple choices of activities to encourage their participation and to enable each to take advantage of his\her unique time table. The child is offered real choices by the teacher and the teacher will accept the child's choices. Children have the opportunity to repeat activities so that they can explore all aspects of an activity as well as gain confidence in mastering a skill. Large and small structured group activity is kept to a minimum to enable the child to have hands on experiences.

The indoor environment is set up to promote the child's growth in confidence and independence. We display the materials on trays within reach of the child in an inviting, uncluttered manner. The puzzles, hands on age appropriate table toys and art supplies are within reach on low shelves.

We provide equipment for gross motor activities. Children like to climb on, in and through the climbing equipment, slide down the slide, and go up and down the stairs. We have an exercise mat that is used in the different classes where the children can demonstrate their skills, a balance beam is also available.

The outdoor environment was designed and built by the parents of MFLC. It includes swings, a climbing device, a slide and sandbox. We go outside every day, weather permitting, since we feel this is an important experience for young children. In addition to the equipment, we use chalk, paint, water, bubbles, balls, foam blocks, a parachute and play games like Duck Duck Goose.

Our Curriculum is intentionally designed and carefully structured to provide each child growth in relation to the whole person: social, emotional, academic, and physical. We find that when we nurture a child's self esteem; the child can be the source of much of his/her own development. We strive to help children resolve conflicts in ways that do not damage self esteem. By using the language of acceptance, the teacher conveys to the child the trustworthiness of the child's feelings.

Following is some other information that you may find helpful.

Mushroom never exceeds a student teacher ration of 6/1. And in the Young 3's class, the ratio is kept at 5/1 with the class total never exceeding 10 young children. (NAEYC allows up to nine children per teacher). Mushroom has never required toilet training for participation in any of its classes or special programs.

Most Mushroom lead teachers have been with our school for at least 10 years, and some even longer. We also offer Mushroom children special program teachers in Spanish, Drama, Music and Exercise in the winter. All classes incorporate some kind of cooking activities throughout the year. Projects are, of course, based on the children's ages and abilities.

ENRICHMENT PROGRAM

Several weeks after the beginning of the school year, Mushroom will offer an Enrichment Program on Mondays, Fridays, and occasional Thursdays. This program is designed to provide a variety of enriching experiences to supplement regular classes. Each session will have a specific focus. A calendar describing the activities planned for the month will be distributed two weeks prior to class. Registration forms must be returned to Joan Harrison, the Enrichment Coordinator. Enrichment sessions are from 11:30 - 2:00 PM on Monday and Friday afternoons. Children bring their lunch with drinks to all enrichment sessions.

The “Happy Cookers” meet twice a month on Thursday mornings from 11:15-12:30. The children learn about and prepare foods. They bring their lunch to accompany what they have cooked. If the enrichment program is cancelled due to weather the fee will be reimbursed or credited. When pre-school and enrichment are both held as scheduled, refunds will not be made for enrichment absences.
